Our PDS Partner Schools host various sections of our courses, ensuring that our students are getting hands-on exposure to and experience from teaching from the earliest stages through the culmination of their education. Following is a list of courses with a field experience component, and a list of the schools that typically host them; click on the school to visit its webpage and learn more about it.

EDU 201, Introduction to Elementary Education
Introduction to Elementary Education introduces students interested in the education profession to elementary school teaching. Application of major theories, consideration of developmentally appropriate practices relative to NYS learning standards, an introduction to classroom organization, classroom management and discipline, and participation in the reflective writing process are emphasized. A field experience is required.

EDU 211, Introduction to Literacy
Introduction to Literacy introduces students interested in teaching in elementary school settings to current literacy theories and practices supportive of diverse populations and congruent with NYS Learning Standards. School-based activities that support course objectives are required.
Either a field experience or a virtual experience is required for this course.

EDU 311, The Teaching of Reading & the Other Language Arts in the Elementary School
Builds and supports pedagogical content knowledge developed in EDU/EDF201 and EDU211. In-depth curricular, theoretical, and practical educational frameworks are explored through field-based teaching in school settings. Students will plan, implement and evaluate language arts lessons incorporating the New York State standards for English Language Arts; practice and evaluate assessment tools and processes; become reflective practitioners; and demonstrate effective teaching abilities.

EDU 511, Methods of Teaching English Language Arts
Building methodological practice from the theoretical scaffold of literacy knowledge and teaching. Students participate in classroom practice for at least 40 hours while exploring in-depth curricular, theoretical, and practical educational frameworks. Participants learn and practice the pedagogy required for teaching language arts across the curriculum; plan, implement, and evaluate lessons incorporating the New York State standards for English language arts; practice and evaluate assessment tools and processes; become reflective practitioners; and demonstrate effective techniques for instructional organization.

EDU 312, The Teaching of Mathematics & Science in the Elementary School
EDU 312 is a basic curriculum course for elementary teachers that explores in-depth curricular, theoretical, and practical educational frameworks. Students will plan, implement and evaluate lessons incorporating the New York State standards for mathematics, science and technology; practice and evaluate assessment tools and processes; become reflective practitioners; and demonstrate effective techniques for instructional organization.

EDU 682, Enhancing and Integrating Elementary Social Studies, Science and Mathematics
Designed for those seeking certification in childhood education. Provides opportunities for research and field experience investigating the connections between theory and practice in selecting, organizing, and presenting elementary school science, mathematics, and social studies material and evaluating pupil progress. Students exhibit the characteristics of reflective practitioners and teachers as researchers.

EDU 329, Integrated Thematic Instruction for Young Children
Students will use knowledge of how children develop and learn to provide opportunities that support the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and aesthetic development of pre-school, kindergarten, and primary-aged children. Students will develop, implement, and evaluate an integrated curriculum that focuses on children's needs in a culturally and linguistically diverse field placement setting. Students will evaluate and demonstrate the use of technology with young children.

EDU 211:
EDU 211 sections include a service learning component called “Global Book Hour”. Global Book Hour is held at Wegmans on Amherst Street (Saturday mornings) or at the Westside Value Laundromat (Monday evenings). Teacher candidates share global children’s literature with children who attend. Children participate in music and movement activities, vocabulary games, geography and art projects all facilitated by the teacher candidates and related to the books read. Global Book Hour allows EDU 211 students to practice and apply course content in a meaningful, authentic context.
