Based on stakeholder feedback, the PDS redirected its 2020-2021 funds to support professional development opportunities for PDS partners -- teacher candidates, student teachers, student teaching supervisors, mentors, classroom teachers, school leaders, international colleagues (IPDS, IGPE), and higher education/teacher education faculty. Presenter: Gholdy Muhammad, Associate Professor of Language and Literacy & Director of the Urban Literacy Collaborative and Clinic, Georgia State University
Audience: All PDS Stakeholders
Description: In Cultivating Genius, Dr. Gholdy E. Muhammad presents an equity framework—one that is grounded in history and restores excellence in literacy education. This framework, which she names Historically Responsive Literacy, was derived from the study of literacy development within 19th-century Black literacy societies. The framework is essential and universal for all students, especially youth of color, who traditionally have been marginalized in learning standards, school policies, and classroom practices. In her book, Muhammad presents practical approaches to cultivate the genius in students and within teachers. In this session, Dr. Gholdy Muhammad will clearly define culture, equity, anti-racism and culturally & historically responsive education. Together, equity will be explored and revisited in deep, multifaceted ways, emphasizing the need for equity education across the nation. By the end of this session, educators will understand equity, anti-racism, and responsive education and will be charged to engage in self-identity work. In addition, educators will be introduced to a five-layered equity model for teaching and learning: (1) identity, (2) skills, (3) intellectualism, (4) criticality and (5) joy.
